Goodwill North Central Wisconsin (NCW) is marking National Workforce Development Month this September, recognizing two decades of efforts to advance workforce initiatives both locally and nationally. The organization emphasizes the role of workforce professionals in strengthening economies.
Chris Hess, President and CEO of Goodwill NCW, stated, “From skills training and job placement to ongoing support services, Goodwill NCW offers a comprehensive range of employment solutions designed to help individuals build pathways to sustained employment and improved financial stability. The power of work extends beyond the individual—it strengthens families, uplifts communities, and fuels local economies. When people work, communities thrive.”
One program highlighted during the month is School-to-Work, which assists high school students in developing job skills. With the new academic year beginning, Goodwill NCW stores are preparing to welcome students from over 40 schools across its service area.
The School-to-Work initiative aims to bridge the gap for high school students with barriers who may find it difficult to enter the workforce after graduation. The program provides these students with practical work experience within Goodwill retail locations.
For more than 15 years, the Ashwaubenon Goodwill Store has worked with Syble Hopp School in De Pere as part of this effort. Syble Hopp serves children with disabilities by providing an inclusive environment focused on helping each student reach their potential. Each week, groups from Syble Hopp gain hands-on experience at the store while working toward their personal goals.
Ashwaubenon Store Team Leader Rosa McMorrow said, “The ultimate goal for the students is to build skills so that they can get employment with either Goodwill or outside in our community.”
Goodwill NCW reports that 81% of job seekers who found employment through its services in 2024 came from underserved populations. These include individuals with refugee status, those without housing, people involved in the justice system, and persons with disabilities.
