As the new school year begins, local authorities are emphasizing the importance of safe driving in school zones. Sheriff Matt Spence has issued a reminder to the community about the risks associated with excessive speed and distracted driving, particularly during times when children are arriving at or leaving school.
According to Sheriff Spence, "Driving at safe speeds and staying attentive behind the wheel—especially in and around school zones—is not just responsible behavior, it’s a matter of public safety. Excessive speed and distracted driving significantly increase the risk of accidents, particularly during school start and release times when pedestrian and vehicle traffic is at its peak. Children can be unpredictable, and a few seconds of inattention or driving too fast can lead to tragic consequences."
To address these concerns, the Sheriff's Office will be increasing patrols in school zones during morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up hours. The enforcement will focus on monitoring speed limits closely. Sheriff Spence stated that violators will receive tickets without warnings if their actions endanger children or school personnel.
"We urge all drivers to slow down, stay alert, and prioritize school zone safety every day," said Spence.
He concluded by saying, "Together, we can protect our most valuable assets—our children."
