Kendra Klein, a student in the legal studies/paralegal program at Lakeshore College, has been elected president of the Wisconsin Student Government (WSG). Klein is set to graduate in May 2026 and is the first student from Lakeshore to hold this position. Traditionally, the role has gone to students from larger urban colleges within the Wisconsin Technical College System.
The WSG includes representatives from all 16 districts of the Wisconsin Technical College System. Its mission is “to represent, promote, advocate and protect the interests of the technical colleges and their students,” according to its website. The organization also works on building relationships with state legislators and securing support for technical colleges.
“Congratulations to Kendra on this exciting opportunity to represent not only Lakeshore College, but all the technical colleges within Wisconsin,” said Lakeshore College President Dr. Paul Carlsen. “We are proud of her achievement and look forward to the work she is able to accomplish with the Wisconsin Student Government.”
Klein began her one-year term as WSG president in April after previously serving as a governor representing Lakeshore College. Each college in WTCS has two governors in WSG but only one vote when electing a president each year.
“I'm hoping to strengthen the communications and relationships among the 16 colleges’ governors and lieutenant governors so they can actively share their college’s unique strengths and needs,” Klein shared. “My goal is for us to come to a similar understanding and identify priorities that we will present as a collective, student-driven organization to our local legislators across Wisconsin.”
As president, Klein will attend monthly WSG meetings as well as bi-monthly meetings of the Wisconsin Technical College System Board. She plans to meet with state representatives in Madison next February about issues affecting WTCS students such as mental health resources, affordable education, food insecurity, broadband access, and childcare.
In addition to her new role with WSG, Klein continues as president of both Lakeshore’s Phi Theta Kappa honor society chapter and its Paralegal Student Association since fall 2024.
Lakeshore College serves over 9,000 students annually at campuses in Cleveland, Manitowoc, Sheboygan, and other locations throughout its district. About 800 students graduate each year; recent associate degree graduates report median salaries of $61,355 within six months after graduation. The college has received national recognition for its programs: it was ranked #2 nationally by Washington Monthly (https://washingtonmonthly.com/2023college-guide/best-community-colleges-2023-ranking/), #17 by Forbes (https://www.forbes.com/top-two-year-colleges/), #20 by WalletHub.com (https://wallethub.com/edu/e/best-worst-community-colleges/15076), listed among Aspen Institute’s top-150 two-year colleges (https://highered.aspeninstitute.org/aspen-prize/), won a 2024 Bellwether Award (https://bellwethercollegeconsortium.com/bellwether-awards/), and was named Large Business/Industry of the Year by The Chamber of Manitowoc County (https://chambermanitowoccounty.org/business-of-the-year-award-recipients).
