The Manitowoc County Historical Society Museum and Pinecrest Village will host a program on June 20, focusing on the history of Emancipation and Juneteenth. The event is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 924 Pinecrest Road in Manitowoc.
Participants will explore the history and context of Juneteenth in the United States, including topics such as racial injustice, the Civil War, and the limitations of the Emancipation Proclamation. The program encourages groups to consider the modern significance of Juneteenth and its long-term impact.
As part of this experience, attendees will learn about Company F, 29th Infantry Unit, United States Colored Troops—the only African American Civil War unit credited to Wisconsin. They will also take part in Emancipation celebrations and follow the story of Company “D” 27th Wisconsin, which was involved in the liberation of Texas and has ties to the local community.
The event is open to the public with hands-on education stations aimed at homeschoolers and school-age students. Advanced registration is suggested for special pricing; however, general admission will be available on-site as well. For more information or to register, visit ManitowocCountyHistory.org or call (920) 684-4445.
The Manitowoc County Historical Society is located in Eastern Wisconsin's scenic Ice Age Kettle Moraine countryside. It features a living history museum with a Welcome Center offering local history exhibits and research services alongside Pinecrest Historical Village—a collection of over 25 historic buildings furnished with period items from early settlers.
Pinecrest Historical Village began in 1970 through a land donation from Hugo and Eleanor Vetting. It represents a small Wisconsin community from the early 1900s with buildings that form its commercial, social, and political core while showcasing various architectural styles from Wisconsin's history.
