The Chamber of Manitowoc County issued the following announcement on June 13.
The Manitowoc County Historical Society, 924 Pinecrest Road in Manitowoc, in partnership with the Upper Midwest Blacksmith Association (UMBA), will present a special hands-on program called “The Other Side of the Anvil” on Saturday, June 25 and Sunday, June 26 from 10 am to 4 pm both days. Blacksmiths from across the Midwest will gather at the museum for an educational and entertaining look at the historic trade.
In addition to the Blacksmith Shop in Pinecrest Village, there will be multiple forging stations—complete with forge, anvil, vise and tools— fired up and skilled regional blacksmiths will provide hands-on instruction for guests. Guests are encouraged to take part in blacksmithing demonstrations by stepping up to a forging station and with the guidance of an experienced smith, make a small iron object using the same heat and hammer techniques practiced at the historical village’s shop. During the weekend event, guests will be invited to create an "S" hook or a bottle opener.
The program is included in general admission to the museum - $10 for adults, $7 for children age 4 to 17, and free for those under age 4. Admission is free for MCHS Members. Guests of any age can participate, but those under 18 must have the signed permission of an adult and need to be accompanied by an adult while they work. Safety glasses and gloves will be provided. Participants will be accepted on a first-come first-served basis. For more information visit ManitowocCountyHistory.org or call (920) 684-4445.
About the Manitowoc County Historical Society
Nestled in the scenic rolling Ice Age Kettle Moraine countryside of Eastern Wisconsin, the Manitowoc County Historical Society is a museum of living history. This 60-acre interpretive museum of local history features a Welcome Center with local history exhibits and research services and the outdoor Pinecrest Historical Village - a collection of over 25 historic buildings with period furnishings from Manitowoc County's early settlers.
Pinecrest Historical Village began in 1970 with a land donation from the Hugo and Eleanor Vetting family. The Village has grown to represent a reproduction of a small Wisconsin community during the early 1900s. The buildings form the commercial, social, and political core of a town and they represent several architectural styles of Wisconsin's history. The furnishings, items, and tools in the various buildings used by the Pinecrest Village interpreters are either original pieces or carefully researched reproductions.
