Solar for Seniors at Sheboygan Senior Community!

Sheboygan County Chamber of Commerce issued the following announcement on Oct. 14

Sheboygan, WI: Sheboygan Senior Community is breaking ground on a 200.25 kW, 448 bifacial panel solar energy field on their campus. The objective is to provide power to replace at least 28% of current energy use. Once in place, SSC can save up to 40%, more than $35,000 annually, on current consumption helping the organization build a sustainable future for the environment and elderly population.

“In a time when just getting through each day is a challenge, it has been very rewarding to work on a project that is all about the future. Not only is renewable energy the right thing to do for our planet, SSC will enjoy substantially lower utility bills for years to come.” said Paul Treffert, President and CEO.

This project is possible in large part due to a $242,581 grant from Wisconsin’s Office of Energy Innovation (OEI). OEI plans to use this project as a template for other nonprofits in Wisconsin switching to solar. SSC also received an additional grant of $25,000 worth of solar panels from Solar for Good.

Through its partnership with Legacy Solar Co-op, SSC found a tax sponsor who will provide the remaining upfront cost for the solar array. SSC will then pay off the array from the tax sponsor. The sooner the project is paid for; the sooner the annual cost savings will be enjoyed.

“SSC is fortunate to have the land available for an array of this size, and the opportunity to utilize the latest in battery energy storage systems technology. We hope our project can be used as an example for other senior healthcare and nonprofit organizations,” said Stephanie Goetz, Director of Operations and Project Manager.

Other partners include Plymouth-based Arch Electric for the solar installation and Lakeshore Technical College as a local solar resource for students in their Clean Energy Program.

The panels will be ground-mounted in the southeast quadrant of the 38.5-acre property.
