Kendra Klein, a student in Lakeshore College’s legal studies/paralegal program, has been elected president of the Wisconsin Student Government (WSG). She is the first student from Lakeshore to hold this position, which has typically been filled by students from larger urban colleges within the Wisconsin Technical College System.
The WSG consists of representatives from all 16 districts of the Wisconsin Technical College System. Its mission is “to represent, promote, advocate and protect the interests of the technical colleges and their students,” according to its website. The organization also works on building relationships with state legislators and gathering support for technical colleges across Wisconsin.
Lakeshore College President Dr. Paul Carlsen commented on Klein’s achievement: “Congratulations to Kendra on this exciting opportunity to represent not only Lakeshore College, but all the technical colleges within Wisconsin. We are proud of her achievement and look forward to the work she is able to accomplish with the Wisconsin Student Government.”
Klein began her one-year term as WSG president in April. She previously served as a governor representing Lakeshore College within WSG. Each college in WTCS appoints two governors who participate in annual elections for WSG president, with each college casting one vote after candidate presentations.
“I'm hoping to strengthen the communications and relationships among the 16 colleges’ governors and lieutenant governors so they can actively share their college’s unique strengths and needs,” Klein said. “My goal is for us to come to a similar understanding and identify priorities that we will present as a collective, student-driven organization to our local legislators across Wisconsin.”
As WSG president, Klein will attend monthly meetings of the organization as well as bi-monthly meetings of the Wisconsin Technical College System Board. In February, she plans to meet with state representatives in Madison about issues important to WTCS students such as mental health resources, affordable education, food insecurity, broadband internet access, and childcare.
In addition to her new role at WSG, Klein serves as president of both Lakeshore College’s chapter of Phi Theta Kappa honor society and its Paralegal Student Association since fall 2024.
Lakeshore College educates more than 9,000 students annually through programs focused on career skills and transfer opportunities. The institution has received national recognition including rankings by Washington Monthly (#2), Forbes (#17), WalletHub.com (#20), selection as a top-150 two-year college by the Aspen Institute, winning a 2024 Bellwether Award, and being named Large Business/Industry of the Year by the Chamber of Manitowoc County in 2021.
