Lakeland University has been recognized in the 2026 U.S. News & World Report’s Best Colleges rankings for its efforts to advance social mobility among students. The university is ranked #54 in the category of Top Performers on Social Mobility, improving its position from previous years.

The U.S. News & World Report notes that economically disadvantaged students often face more challenges in completing college, even when accounting for their high school achievements. However, some institutions are more effective at enrolling and graduating a significant number of students who receive Pell Grants, which are primarily awarded to those with family incomes below $50,000.

Earlier this year, Lakeland University was named a Carnegie Opportunity College, becoming the only institution in Wisconsin to receive this recognition. This designation acknowledges colleges that expand access to higher education and produce strong outcomes for graduates.

Lakeland University President Beth Borgen commented on the latest ranking: “Our commitment to removing the barriers for students of all ages to pursue the dream of a college education is clear. We will continue to find ways to partner and develop innovative approaches that position Lakeland as a student-centered community resource and problem solver.”

The university’s status as a Carnegie Opportunity College reflects its work in increasing access for students from diverse backgrounds and supporting positive results such as higher post-graduation earnings.
