Lakeland University Associate Professor of Writing Jodie Mortag is scheduled to present a screenwriting workshop at the first Sheboygan Film Festival. The session, titled Screenwriting 101, will take place on Friday, October 3, at 2 p.m. at WordHaven BookHouse in Sheboygan.
The workshop aims to introduce both writers and film enthusiasts to basic techniques used in script composition. Attendees will learn about the structure of screenplays and how language can be used creatively to turn stories into visual art. Participants will also look at examples from various film genres including drama, romance, and science fiction.
Access to the workshop is included with a festival pass, though there is a suggested donation of $5 for those attending only this session.
Mortag has a background rooted in Wisconsin and holds degrees from Lakeland University and Wichita State University. At Lakeland, she teaches courses in fiction, nonfiction, and screenwriting. She also organizes the annual Great Lakes Writers Festival and serves as editor for the university’s literary magazine “Seems.”
Her writing has been published in several journals such as “Ruminate,” “North Dakota Quarterly,” “Counterclock,” “Fourteen Hills,” “Barnstorm,” “Stoneboat,” “Fractions,” and “Metal Scratches.” Her short story "Nightcrawlers" won first prize in Mikrokosmos’ 2024 fiction contest.
More information about the event can be found on the Sheboygan Film Festival website.
