Senator Eric Wimberger, a Republican representing Wisconsin's 2nd Senate district since 2025, raised concerns on August 27, 2025, regarding the Department of Natural Resources’ (DNR) management of funds dedicated to supporting the state’s outdoorsmen.
In a series of posts, Wimberger cited findings from a recent audit: "A newly-released audit reveals that the DNR is spending almost $20 million less than it did nearly 20 years ago to support Wisconsin's outdoorsmen with its Fish and Wildlife Account." (August 27, 2025).
He continued by calling for greater financial transparency and stewardship from the agency. "The DNR must provide reassurances that it will manage its finances in a way that better invests in Wisconsin's fishing and wildlife resources before it comes back to the Legislature asking us to pass a greater share of the cost onto outdoor enthusiasts." (August 27, 2025).
Citing details from the state's nonpartisan Audit Bureau report, Wimberger stated: "The state's nonpartisan Audit Bureau found the DNR's Fish and Wildlife Account is only spending $46.3 million of its available $92.9 million - less than half - investing in activities that primarily benefit hunting and fishing. That number is significantly down from the $68.2" (August 27, 2025).
Wimberger was elected to represent Wisconsin’s 2nd Senate district after replacing Robert Cowles in 2025.
