Today, the City of Manitowoc introduced a Designated Outdoor Refreshment Area (DORA) in its downtown. This initiative allows patrons of participating licensed establishments to enjoy alcoholic beverages outdoors while exploring the city's riverfront, parks, public art, and local businesses.

The DORA will be operational daily from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. within a specified area of downtown Manitowoc. Participants can purchase drinks from DORA-licensed establishments and carry them outside in city-approved containers marked with an official sticker and the name of the business. The program will run annually from April 15th through October 31st, starting this year on July 11.

“This is a really fun way to encourage citizens and visitors to enjoy the fresh air and riverfront during the warmer months,” said Director of Tourism Courtney Hansen. “The zone includes Burger Boat Park, Shipbuilders Company Park, and the River Point District, all of which are ideal places to savor your favorite drink.”

To participate in this program, patrons should request their beverage in a DORA cup and consume it within the designated zone before properly disposing of it prior to entering another establishment or leaving the area. It is advised to check with local shops regarding carrying-in drinks.

Establishments holding valid liquor licenses within the DORA zone can register annually at Manitowoc’s Clerks Office for participation. Current participants include Brick's Downtown Bar & Grill, Chewy's, Craft Creek Brewing Company, Digger Dave's, Legend Larry's, Pizza Garden, Shoot the Bull, The Shrunken Head, and Wrap It Up.

The city emphasizes that all existing laws concerning legal drinking age and conduct remain enforced. Patrons are encouraged to use taxi services or SafeRide Program if necessary.
