Today, legislation aimed at assisting Superior residents in replacing lead service lines has been signed into law. The bill, authored by Senator Romaine Robert Quinn and Representative Chanz Green, allows Superior's water utility to qualify for federal funding to help cover the costs of replacing these lines.
Senator Quinn emphasized the importance of safe drinking water for all Wisconsin residents. "Safe drinking water is vital to all Wisconsinites no matter which part of the state you live in," he stated. He also highlighted the significance of including Superior residents in accessing these funds.
Quinn and Green advocated for this legislation, which Governor Evers has now signed into law. Despite opposition from the Mayor of Superior, who testified against the bill, it has been enacted as Wisconsin Act 8.
Quinn expressed confusion over the mayor's opposition, stating: "I was perplexed by the mayor’s logic to deprive helping Superior residents replace lead service lines." He recounted the mayor's testimony against Assembly Bill 59, where he expressed concerns about its impact on his city.
Despite these challenges, Quinn believes that the new law will have a positive effect on Superior residents by facilitating lead line replacements.
