Arbor Day 2022 & Tree City Usa Awards

Tres

City Of Manitowoc issued the following announcement on April 28.

April 29th marks the 150th anniversary of Arbor Day, and Mayor Nickels recently signed a proclamation naming April 29, 2022 as Arbor Day in the City of Manitowoc.   The public is invited to the City of Manitowoc’s Arbor Day Celebration, which will take place at 1:15 p.m. on Friday, April 29th at the Citizen Park Recreation Center, 930 N 18th Street, Manitowoc.  Jeff Edgar from Silver Creek Nurseries will give a short presentation which will be followed by a ceremonial tree planting of trees donated by the Izaak Walton League on the south side of Citizen Park.  Grade school students who attend will receive a free tree seedling.  The celebration is being sponsored by the American Transmission Company.

In conjunction with Arbor Day, the City of Manitowoc recently received its 2021 Tree City USA award.   This is the thirty-ninth year in a row that the City of Manitowoc has been named a Tree City USA community.  The award honors the city’s commitment to effective urban forest management.  The National Arbor Day Foundation sponsors the Tree City USA program in cooperation with the National Association of State Foresters and the USDA Forest Service.  To receive this recognition the City of Manitowoc had to meet the four criteria:  1) have an active tree board; 2) have a tree care ordinance; 3) have an annual community forestry budget of at least $2 per capita; and 4) have an Arbor Day observance and proclamation.

In addition, the City of Manitowoc also received a Tree City USA Growth Award for demonstrating an environmental improvement and a higher level of tree care. Since this is the tenth year that the City of Manitowoc has participated in the Tree City USA Growth Award Program, the City of Manitowoc was declared a Sterling Tree City USA.

Trees provide multiple benefits to a community when properly planted and maintained.  They help to improve the visual appeal of a neighborhood, increase property values, reduce home cooling costs, remove air pollutants and provide wildlife habitat, among many other benefits.  Anyone interested in planting or removing a tree in the terrace area (the area between the sidewalk and the street) must complete a permit.  Go to www.manitowoc.org/forestry for more information.

For more details, contact the Department of Infrastructure – Forestry Division between the hours of 7:30 am and 4:00 pm, Monday through Friday at (920) 686-3580.  Additional information can be found by visiting www.manitowoc.org/forestry, following the Manitowoc Parks and Recreation Division or City of Manitowoc on Facebook, or by visiting  www.manitowoc.org/notifyme and signing up to receive important information via text message or email.  Download the City of Manitowoc app from the App Store or Google Play and click on the Alert Center to subscribe to emergency alerts.
