City of Sheboygan issued the following announcement on Oct. 1.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and subcontractor Michels Corporation recently completed Phase 1 of the South Pier reconstruction project. Phase 1 included reconstructing 1,250 feet of the South Breakwater. Michels encapsulated the existing breakwater in steel sheet piles with an internal bracing system and filled the annular space of the structure with 13,000 tons of clear stone. Crews also removed and installed 5,000 tons of armor stone and scour stone on the channel side of the structure. Upon completion of the project, a 30-foot wide by 1,250-foot long of 1-foot thick concrete cap was installed. In order to close out the federal contract, Michels Corporation was required to remove and restore all the “on-land” areas that were disturbed.
Phase 2 of the project will be to reconstruct from the point they left off on Phase 1 about 300 feet offshore to start of the pier near the city-owned restroom facility near the Harbor Pointe Miniature Golf. This phase of the project will take approximately two years to complete. Given the duration of the project and concerns with street closures, the City recommended the contractor keep one lane open around the cul-de-sac during the Phase 2 work. There will be no parking on the cul-de-sac from October/November 2021 through July 2023, but will allow one-lane of vehicular traffic around the cul-de-sac. Overall this is project is valued at about $12 million and the City of Sheboygan appreciates the commitment from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to invest in critical infrastructure for our lakefront community.
