Rock the Block Neighborhood Revitalization Program

17

City of Sheboygan issued the following announcement on Sept. 13.

Habitat for Humanity Lakeside invites the entire community to join in its annual neighborhood revitalization program, Rock the Block, on Thursday, September 16, Saturday, September 18, and Sunday, September 19, 2021 at St. Peter Claver Parish and the surrounding Franklin Park neighborhood. This event brings together several community partners including the City of Sheboygan, the Sheboygan Fire Department, the Sheboygan Police Department, and the IBEW Local 494, along with local businesses, neighbors, and friends in a concentrated effort to improve quality of life in a designated neighborhood. Through Rock the Block, Habitat provides affordable financing for exterior home repairs and community projects by engaging donors and mobilizing volunteers to have a positive impact in a focused area.

“The City of Sheboygan is excited to once again co-host the Rock the Block event with Habitat for Humanity Lakeside along with one of our official neighborhoods. Neighborhood revitalization is a focus area of the City’s strategic plan and the city applauds the efforts of the Habitat for Humanity Lakeside,” stated City Administrator Todd Wolf.

This year’s efforts are focused on the Franklin Park neighborhood on Sheboygan’s south side. This neighborhood was recognized by the Common Council as the 12th official Neighborhood Association in Sheboygan in November 2020. Residents are continuing to develop this fledgling association, building a sense of community by investing in their neighborhood and in each other.

“Events like this that unite people around a common goal truly have the power to transform our communities, one neighborhood at a time,” says Kendra Kelling, Volunteer and Community Engagement Manager at Habitat for Humanity Lakeside. “We are proud to serve 11 homeowners with repairs and complete seven community based projects to benefit the entire neighborhood.”

You can volunteer to be a part of this powerful community event too! Habitat is looking for volunteers to assist in the completion of exterior home repairs and community projects such as painting, porches, fencing, and landscaping. Volunteers are provided with lunch and water and are asked to commit to the full workday. Please contact Kendra at kkelling@habitatlakeside.com or 920-458-3399 x301 if you’d like to sign up or with any questions.

This program has a lasting impact on the lives of Sheboygan residents. Mary, a resident of End Park Neighborhood who participated in the 2019 Rock the Block event exclaimed, “I’m so excited to be a part of this year’s event and pay it forward to another neighborhood!” when she stopped in to register as a volunteer.

This year’s Rock the Block is being funded by the generosity of donors. The Lead Sponsor for this event is Lowe’s Home Improvement, along with Associate Event Sponsors: Alliant Energy, the City of Sheboygan, International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Union Local 494, and several other donors.
