The Manitowoc-Two Rivers YMCA will focus on child safety throughout April in observance of Child Abuse Prevention and Safety Month. From April 21-25, 2025, the YMCA will take part in the Five Days of Action, a nationwide campaign aimed at encouraging adults to take proactive measures to protect children from sexual abuse.
Julie Grossman, CEO of Manitowoc-Two Rivers YMCA, emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating, “There is nothing we do at the Y that is more important than this work.” She highlighted that while the focus is heightened in April, their commitment to child protection is ongoing. Grossman invited the community to assist in building a robust safety net to prevent and address child abuse.
The campaign is focused on three key actions: KNOW, SEE, RESPOND. KNOW involves understanding what prevention entails and being aware of pertinent questions to ask organizations involved with children. SEE focuses on recognizing red flags that could indicate harmful intentions, as 90% of child abusers are known to their victims. RESPOND means validating a child’s experiences and promptly reporting any concerns to authorities.
The Manitowoc-Two Rivers YMCA is committed to enhancing its child safety efforts. This year, they are working towards Praesidium Accreditation, conducting a year-long audit to ensure the highest standards of child safety. Furthermore, the YMCA holds bi-annual “Know Your Score!” assessments on child abuse prevention, developing improvement plans based on outcomes. The presence of a Certified Praesidium Guardian on staff underscores their priority on child safety.
As summer approaches, Grossman noted the significance of ensuring safe environments for children’s activities and camps, stating, “By embracing the principles of KNOW. SEE. RESPOND., we can create a safer community for all children.”
