Shae Sortwell, a Republican member of the Wisconsin State House representing the 2nd district since 2019, has voiced his opposition to proposed federal changes affecting the hemp industry in a series of posts on social media.

On November 11, 2025, Sortwell criticized recent legislative efforts related to hemp, stating, “The effort to destroy the entire hemp industry using the government funding bill is a stupid move.”

Later that day, he shared a link without additional commentary: “https://t.co/wkfa28T8o5” (November 11, 2025).

Clarifying his stance on November 12, 2025, Sortwell wrote: “To be clear my position on the Hemp provision in the federal funding bill. I oppose it. However, WI codified some of the hemp provisions of the Federal Farm Bill into our state statute a few years ago, so I am looking into how this federal change would or would not affect WI”.

Sortwell has represented Wisconsin’s 2nd House district since succeeding André Jacque in 2019. His comments come as lawmakers debate federal legislation that could impact state-level regulations on hemp production and sales.
