Applications are now open for the 2026 student exchange program to Japan, coordinated by the Manitowoc International Relations Association (MIRA) for high school students in the Manitowoc area. The program gives selected students a chance to experience Japanese culture, live with host families, and build international friendships.

The application process runs from January through March and requires an essay and two letters of recommendation. Applicants will also participate in personal interviews with the MIRA student exchange committee. Students must cover their own round-trip airfare between Chicago and Tokyo-Narita, which is estimated at $2,400 to $2,800, as well as traveler’s insurance, passport fees, and personal expenses during their stay.

The exchange typically involves Manitowoc students traveling to Japan in late July. Afterward, the Japanese delegation visits Manitowoc in early August. For 2026, the program is scheduled from July 20 to August 8.

Interested students can find more information on how to apply by reading the rack card or completing the Google Form linked on MIRA’s website. The deadline for applications is March 6, 2026.

Questions about the program can be directed to the Tourism Department at tourism@manitowoc.org or by calling 920-686-3508. Updates are also available on the Manitowoc International Relations Association Facebook page.
