The Manitowoc County Historical Society will host a wood stove cooking workshop for children as part of its Winter Weekend series on Saturday, February 14, from noon to 2 p.m. at 924 Pinecrest Road in Manitowoc. The class is intended to introduce children to basic woodstove cooking through kid-friendly recipes and hands-on activities. Advanced registration is required.

Winter Weekend events run from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., with historic interpreters providing demonstrations and sharing stories inside wood stove-heated historic buildings. Activities during the event will highlight Victorian-era traditions, including making vintage valentines and exploring old-fashioned love notes using paper folding and scrapbooking techniques.

An old-fashioned sleigh rally is also planned, featuring antique horse-drawn sleighs competing in various categories at 1 p.m., weather permitting. Visitors can watch drivers participate or learn about horse-drawn sleigh driving.

A historical meal will be served at the Meeme House at 11:30 a.m., followed by tavern games. This meal requires advanced registration, and more details are available on the museum’s website.

Additional activities include sledding down Niles Church hill—participants are encouraged to bring their own sleds for races or snowman building with wildlife-friendly decorations—and opportunities for snowshoeing or cross-country skiing, also requiring attendees to bring their own equipment.

The museum opens for Winter Weekends from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the second Saturday of January, February, and March. During these weekends, guests can explore selected historic buildings within Pinecrest Village and participate in winter activities such as snowshoeing, skiing, or sledding. Only buildings involved in that day’s programming will be open; visitors should note that some paths may be slippery.

Admission prices are $10 for adults and $5 for children aged four to seventeen; children under four are admitted free of charge. The Winter Weekends program is supported by WOMT 100 radio station. For further information or registration details, visit ManitowocCountyHistory.org or call (920) 684-4445.

According to the organization’s description, the Manitowoc County Historical Society operates a living history museum on sixty acres of land in eastern Wisconsin’s Kettle Moraine region. Its Pinecrest Historical Village features over twenty-five restored historic buildings furnished with original pieces or researched reproductions representing early twentieth-century Wisconsin communities.

“Pinecrest Historical Village began in 1970 with a land donation from the Hugo and Eleanor Vetting family,” according to information provided by the Society.
