The Manitowoc County Historical Society is set to host a program as part of its Hungry for History series on March 19. The event, themed “Heirloom gardens and finding your roots,” will be held at Branch Station, located at 8112 Village Drive in Whitelaw. The program begins at 11 am and will be followed by a meal.
Susan Apps Bodilly, an author and daughter of renowned Wisconsin writer Jerry Apps, will lead the session titled “Planting a Garden and Finding Your Roots.” This lecture will explore the history of heirloom gardens in Wisconsin and how individuals can relate it to their family histories. Attendees will learn to use primary source documents related to gardens as tools for historical inquiry.
Participants are encouraged to adopt the inquiry strategy “observe, think, wonder” to gain new perspectives on garden history. The presentation will also offer ideas for theme gardens, crafts, and practical advice on starting a garden.
Advanced registration is required for this event, preferably one week in advance. The cost is $35 per person with a 15% discount available for members of the Manitowoc County Historical Society (MCHS).
The Hungry for History series will continue with two more programs: “Tavern Tales of the old Northwest” on October 22 and “Maritime Archaeology and Shipwrecks of Manitowoc County” featuring Caitlin Zant on November 12.

The Manitowoc County Historical Society operates as a living history museum in Eastern Wisconsin’s Kettle Moraine countryside.
