The Manitowoc County Historical Society has announced its endorsement of the Two Lights For Tomorrow national initiative, a project aimed at commemorating America’s 250th anniversary. This initiative will begin on April 18, 2025, marking the start of celebrations leading up to the Declaration of Independence’s 250th anniversary on July 4, 2026.
The historical society emphasizes the importance of honoring the founding principles and ideals that created a unique national identity. It highlights the events of April 18, 1775, when Paul Revere and William Dawes rode out to alert the countryside about impending British actions. A prearranged signal in Boston’s Old North Church steeple—two lanterns—served as a warning and has since become an enduring symbol of American vigilance and preparedness.
A nationwide proposal suggests displaying two lights in public spaces across the country to commemorate this significant event. “State commissions, state governments, federal agencies, and community, heritage, and historical organizations across the country have eagerly endorsed the initiative,” according to a statement from the Manitowoc County Historical Society.
The society also encourages government buildings, community centers, public spaces, and citizens to participate by displaying two lights on April 18th and 19th. The aim is for these displays to serve as reminders of unity and shared history.
