Early Halloween shopping is becoming more common, with many consumers looking for ways to save money. Goodwill North Central Wisconsin (NCW) says buying secondhand costumes and decorations can help shoppers stay within their budgets.
A recent survey by the National Retail Federation (NRF) and Prosper Insights & Analytics found that 49% of people began their Halloween shopping in September. The NRF estimates that spending on Halloween-related items will reach $13.1 billion this year, which is an increase from last year’s $11.6 billion and surpasses the previous record set in 2023.
Sustainability is also a growing concern among shoppers. According to Goodwill Industries International’s annual survey, 76% of adults say Goodwill’s focus on sustainability influences their decision to shop there. This sentiment is even stronger among Gen Z shoppers, with 84% saying sustainability impacts where they shop.
Chris Talton, Vice President of Donated Goods Retail Operations at Goodwill NCW, said, “Halloween is our busiest season, and the Halloween secondhand trend continues to be a popular choice, particularly among DIY costume shoppers. Shopping at Goodwill NCW stores lets individuals create personalized, affordable and eco-friendly costumes while supporting our programs for those who have a goal of learning new job skills.”
At Goodwill NCW retail locations in north central Wisconsin, customers can find ready-to-wear costumes or assemble unique looks from secondhand items. The NRF study reports that 51% of Americans plan to wear costumes this year. Popular children’s costumes include Spiderman, princesses, and witches; adults are choosing witches, vampires, cats, and Batman.
Goodwill NCW highlights that purchases at its stores support its mission of helping people overcome barriers to employment. The organization states that 90 cents of every dollar spent in its stores goes back into local communities to support job training and financial stability programs.
