On November 11, the United States will observe Veterans Day to honor those who have served in the military. In 2024, there are more than 17 million veterans in the country, according to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. As these individuals return to civilian life, providing job support services remains important for their transition.

Kayla Countney, Manager of Mission Relations at Goodwill NCW, stated: “We owe our veterans a huge debt. We stand in awe of the courage and commitment of our armed forces and are honored to help so many veterans find employment when returning to civilian life.”

Goodwill NCW reported that in 2024 it helped veterans develop skills for non-military jobs and increased their median hourly wage by $10.50. The organization also worked to remove barriers that often prevent veterans from gaining employment.

One veteran who benefited is Richard Flirt, named Goodwill NCW’s Veteran of the Year. After leaving military service, Flirt experienced PTSD and had difficulty finding suitable work. Through Career EXCELerate—a program offered by Goodwill NCW with partners Rawhide and Fox Valley Technical College—he trained as a truck driver. He completed his Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) at no cost within ten days and graduated at the top of his class before securing a position with Legacy Trucking. His new job has provided financial stability and allowed him personal achievements such as purchasing a new truck and boat, renovating his home, and traveling.

Flirt said: “I never had someone else invest in me, besides the military, as much as Goodwill. I’m forever grateful.”

To recognize service members’ contributions, Goodwill NCW stores provide a 10% discount every Wednesday for active military members, veterans, police officers, firefighters, and EMS personnel.

Goodwill North Central Wisconsin (Goodwill NCW) is a nonprofit focused on eliminating barriers to employment through skill-building programs aimed at sustained employment and improved financial stability for individuals across its communities.
