The City of Manitowoc is working to reduce the environmental impact of road salt used during winter months. While salt is important for maintaining safe roads and sidewalks, it can negatively affect local lakes, streams, and even drinking water supplies. Many residents may not realize that salt harms species diversity in aquatic environments and contributes to pollution.

To address this issue, the City has implemented several measures such as using salt brine, calibrating its salt trucks, and experimenting with beet juice as alternatives. These steps are intended to decrease the amount of salt entering the environment.

In an effort to educate the public about responsible salt use, Manitowoc is distributing free Salt Wise cups at City Hall. The cups are designed to help residents apply the correct amount of salt needed for about ten squares of sidewalk under most conditions. The City advises residents to shovel snow before applying any salt and encourages them to be mindful when spreading it.

Residents can learn more about reducing their use of road salt and its environmental effects by visiting www.Wisaltwise.com. Additional updates from the City can be found on its Facebook page or by signing up for notifications through www.manitowoc.org. The City’s mobile app also provides emergency alerts and other important information.

“Residents are encouraged to shovel the snow first and to be salt wise when spreading it.”
