The Chamber of Manitowoc County is encouraging the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) programming to help develop skills in students and young professionals. As digital tools become more common in Wisconsin industries, the Chamber sees an opportunity for local youth to gain experience with technology that aligns with current workforce needs.
The organization emphasizes that AI-assisted design platforms can make creative expression more accessible. Students who may not be comfortable with traditional art or coding can use natural language prompts to explore visual storytelling and digital illustration. This approach allows learners to build confidence in design principles without requiring advanced technical skills or expensive equipment.
“Students begin to understand design principles organically, while Chambers gain a flexible way to introduce STEAM concepts without new infrastructure or expensive software suites,” the release states.
According to the Chamber, these tools also benefit educators by making it easier to include STEAM lessons in their curriculum. Employers are able to observe creativity and digital fluency among local talent through such programs. The Chamber believes that aligning these initiatives with career pathways in fields like marketing, user experience (UX), gaming, and animation will help prepare Manitowoc County’s workforce for future demands.
Workshops using AI-powered tools are proposed as a practical entry point for students interested in branding, animation, game design, and multimedia marketing—sectors that are increasingly important for local employers. The Chamber outlines several program formats: design sprints where students address community challenges; career labs simulating roles like digital marketer or animator; studio days partnering youth with employers; and storytelling workshops using AI-generated images.
To implement these initiatives successfully, the Chamber suggests identifying relevant local industries, choosing user-friendly AI tools, creating short sessions for experimentation, forming partnerships with schools and other organizations, establishing pathways from workshops to internships or credentials, and evaluating outcomes based on student portfolios and employer feedback.
The release notes: “AI-enhanced STEAM programming isn’t about novelty—it’s about preparing a resilient talent pipeline.” The goal is for students who participate in these programs to enter the workforce equipped for roles involving marketing teams, product development groups, media creation positions, and other digitally focused careers.
In response to questions about requirements and costs: specialized staff training is generally not needed since many platforms are designed for beginners; traditional art learning is supplemented rather than replaced; and many tools offer free or affordable options suitable for community organizations.
By integrating AI-powered creativity into its programming efforts, The Chamber of Manitowoc County aims to support both student development and local business needs as part of its broader workforce strategy.
